ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are just two days away from their first SEC game of the season.
It’s a big game for Georgia, but a massive game for South Carolina. To Georgia fans, South Carolina is just another SEC opponent. For Carolina fans, this is the second biggest game of the year.
If the Gamecocks want to pull the upset, they’ll need quarterback Spencer Rattler to play the game of his life. He needs to take care of the football, execute the gameplan at a high level, use his legs, and make big, accurate throws down the field.
Good luck, Spencer.
After getting eaten up by the Bulldog defense last year, you know Rattler wants to make a statement against the No. 1 team in the country. We’ve said all during the off-season what Rattler could be one of the best quarterbacks Georgia will see all season, and Kirby Smart has some high praise for the veteran gunslinger earlier this week.

“He's got elite arm talent. I can tell you that,” Smart said. “The throws he makes, deep, vertical, back-shoulder throws. He's thrown a couple field outs. He had a throw against Clemson last year on third and 10, it was a rope. So he's very elusive, very accurate with the ball. Hard to finish on. There's a lot of people that miss tackles on him when they have the opportunity to get him down. So tremendous player. Sees the whole field and some of his best plays come off schedule. I mean, he -- you know, somebody misses somebody or he scrambles and he gets you on a shot. He's very dangerous.”
Last season, Rattle struggled all day long against the reigning national champions, going just 13/25 for 118 yards and two INTs. He was in WAY over his head, but he did play better and better as the 2022 season went along.
The 2023 season didn’t get off to a great start, but it hasn’t exactly been Rattler’s fault. He’s progressed as a quarterback, but he still holds onto the ball a little longer than he should. Of course, he’s had some terrible pass protection from his offensive line. North Carolina’s defense got to him nine times in week one, and Georgia’s defense has the potential to do the same.
Still, with a weak offensive line, his best receiver out, and no running game, Rattler is doing everything he can for the Gamecock offense. When he does get protection, Rattler can be effective. So far this season, Rattler is 55/66 for just under 700 yards and three touchdowns with zero turnovers.
He’s a good athlete and an improved quarterback, but he’ll have to play damn-near perfect to help pull off the upset on Saturday. Kirby Smart believes in his talent, so expect his defense to be ready.
