ATHENS - UGA Football has missed key players out on the field for the first two matchups of the season.

It has “managed” to take down UT Martin and Ball State by scores of 48-7 and 45-3 without a couple of the best players of the team. Kirby Smart and his staff have taken these two games as an opportunity to get a lot of young players involved as a result, so not every takeaway is negative, but Georgia has yet to be 100% healthy this season.

This week, the three starters that highlight the injury conversation ahead of the South Carolina game are Ladd McConkey, Daijun Edwards and Javon Bullard.

Daijun Edwards

Edwards dressed out in each of the first two games, but did not play in either. He has been recovering from an MCL sprain suffered during fall camp. This is an injury that Edwards has dealt with in the past, and him being held out has been labeled as a precaution by coach Smart.

“If we needed him, he was gonna play,” Smart said after Georgia’s 45-3 win over Ball State.

Edwards was available to play this past weekend, but he didn’t need to according to Smart.

Georgia rushed for just 99 yards on 28 attempts against Ball State. With another week of rest and rehab, Edwards is trending towards seeing his first action of the season this weekend against South Carolina.

Ladd McConkey

McConkey has been working through a back injury, the verbiage on where he is at in recovery is vague to this point.

Here is Smart’s most recent comment on his status:

“Ladd (McConkey), day by day. We're trying everything we can to get him back. He's trying everything he can to get him back,” Smart said on Monday. “I don't really know how to answer other than I don't know any more than I knew on Saturday.”

McConkey didn’t dress out for either game, and there is no real answer yet on how close he is to suiting up against South Carolina.

Javon Bullard

Georgia entered the Ball State matchup relatively healthy on defense, especially with Smael Mondon back in the starting lineup.

That health level took a hit when starting safety Javon Bullard left the game in the first half with an ankle injury. He was seen wearing a walking boot on the sidelines after exiting the game.

Here is what Smart said on Monday:

“I have not seen Javon (Bullard) yet because of the Sunday being off. And then today coming in, he will not practice today. I do know that. But as far as where he is, probably won't know until Wednesday's practice whether he's going to be able to go or not. We've had guys in that position with that similar injury being able to play. But I really have no clue until we approach the week.”

Bullard’s status for the South Carolina game is questionable at this point in time.

David Daniel-Sisavahn and Dan Jackson took the majority of the reps at safety in Bullard’s absence against Ball State.
