ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have plenty of motivation heading into the 2023 season.

They’ll have another chance to make college football history, but there are plenty of college football experts who have their doubts.

That would include the College GameDay crew.

During the big morning show this past weekend, analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee, and Desmond Howard all made their SEC champion predictions.

And they all chose the Alabama Crimson Tide as their 2023 SEC Champion.

As if Kirby Smart and his team needed any more motivation.

If you think Georgia is falling off, or just not as good as last year, I get it. No Stetson Bennett. No Todd Monken. No Jalen Carter. No Broderick Jones. They’re breaking in a new quarterback and are replacing a lot of key pieces.

But how can you pick Alabama to win the SEC when they haven’t announced a starting quarterback? Most in Tuscaloose believe redshirt-sophomore Jalen Milroe will win the starting job, but apparently, QB1 is still up for grabs.

That’s what I don’t understand.

At least Kirby Smart has named his starter. Everyone knows Carson Beck will be Georgia’s starting quarterback.

Do the College Gameday guys think just any Alabama quarterback can beat the ‘Dawgs?

Alabama is still an incredibly talented football team. Nick Saban isn’t “washed”. They signed SEVEN five-star prospects in the 2023 class. They’re going to be a very good football team this fall.

But so will Georgia, and they’ve announced a starting quarterback. That’s the biggest question mark as it relates to the 2023 Crimson Tide. And it’s a BIG question mark.

If Milroe does win the job in Tuscaloosa, he’ll bring plenty of athleticism and the ability to run wild on any particular defense. But can he play quarterback? The arm talent is there, but can he be accurate for four quarters? Doing it against Ole Miss and Auburn is one thing, but can he play quarterback at a high level for four quarters against Georgia? I’ve got my doubts.

I’ve got doubts about Tyler Buchner, too. I have a hard time believing that kid can help put up 40 points against a Kirby Smart defense.

Former 5-star Ty Simpson is very good, but he’s never played against a team like Georgia.

So are these “experts” just picking Alabama because they beleive in Saban? Do they know something we don’t about the quarterback situation? Do they think Georgia has more question marks than I do?

“I think they’re flying under the radar and I don’t think people are respecting Alabama right now”, Desmond Howard explained. “Everyone is still excited about Georgia. I think Alabama wins the SEC.”

So Alabama wins the SEC simply because they’re flying “under the radar”? Great analysis, Desmond. That Michigan education is doing wonders for you.

What about you, Pat? When exactly did you become a college football expert by the way?

“I love Georgia,” McAfee said. “I love Kirby Smart. I love everything they have going on. Saban’s back, though. I think Alabama is motivated, and I think they’ll be back.”

So you love Georgia, but Alabama is motivated, huh? That makes total sense.

Alright, Kirk. Your turn. Why is Alabama winning the SEC?

“Alabama has as big a question mark as anyone in the country. Still, this shows how much everyone bows down to Nick Saban. When you question him and say Alabama is done, he comes right back.”

I’m not sure I understand the reasoning behind their picks, but hey, they’re the “experts”.

Will Georgia or Alabama win the SEC again? Or will LSU crash the party? Can Tennessee shock the world?

I guess we’ll find out early December.
