ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are looking for another outside linebacker to step up this fall, and that person could be Chaz Chambliss‍.

A third-year player out of Carrollton, Chambliss is one of Georgia’s most experienced outside linebackers and in a prime position to have a breakout 2023 season.

Last season, Chambliss played in 12 games as a reserve linebacker and on special teams, making 16 tackles, three TFLs, and two sacks.

An instinctive, hard-hitting defender at 6-foot-2 250-pounds, Chambliss brings plenty of power and above-average quickness for his size. A natural pass-rusher, expect Chambliss to get after the quarterback early and often this upcoming season.

Co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann shared his thoughts on Chambliss earlier this week.

“Chaz strains both in terms of his competitive nature and will willingness to battle with people. That makes him a hard guy to block by nature. The guy works extremely hard in all areas whether that’s walk-throughs, meetings, or on the field in individual drills. He’s one of the most common people to stay after practice to work on his own. So naturally, when you work like that and focus on the process, you grow. I think he buys into that and does it every day.  He’s continued to progress and we’re really pleased with him.”

Chambliss wasn’t a 5-star prospect. He doesn’t ideal frame or overly impressive length, but he’s a guy who loves football.

He’s not much of a talker, but he loves to let his play talk for him. He’s a competitor, works hard, and has really progressed during his first two seasons. Now, with Nolan Smith and Robert Beal off to the NFL, Chambliss has a golden opportunity ahead of him.

He has a chance to really take on an important role in Schumann’s defense. A guy who will be asked to not only set the EDGE in the run game, but get after the quarterback, Chambliss will have a lot on his plate this season. He’s a front-runner to win the outside linebacker job, but he has plenty of young, talented, hungry guys right behind him.

Darris Smith looks the part physically, and is he continues to impress and progress in fall camp, he could get some significant playing time this fall. The same for Marvin Jones Jr. Another long, athletic pass-rusher, Jones Jr. was an elite prospect out of high school, and if he can stay healthy, he’s going to see more and more playing time not only this fall, but throughout his career.

OF course, there are three incredibly talented freshman EDGE defenders who are also looking to learn and grow this season.

But this story is about Chambliss. He earned plenty of playing time last year, but in year three, Chambliss has a chance to really shine. He’s obviously won over Glenn Schumann, and he’ll likely win over plenty of Georgia fans over the five months.
