ATHENS - Kirby Smart and UGA football have lost another commitment in the 2024 class.

And once again, it’s another safety.

The Bulldogs lost a commitment from 4-star Jaylen Heyward‍ back on July 18th, and today they saw four-star safety Peyton Woodyard‍ flip his commitment to Alabama.

Woodyard originally committed to Georgia back on January 7th, but has always had his ear out with other schools.

The California native took official visits this summer to Georgia, USC, Alabama and Ohio State while being committed to the Bulldogs.

“I have taken these official visits because of the relationships I have built with the coaches”, Woodyard told Dawg Post in late June. “Because of that my family and I go into these visits with an open mind. At the end of the day I’m still committed to Georgia.”

Now, Woodyard is committed to Alabama, and the Bulldogs need to find another safety. Unfortunately, they’ll have to go the flip route themselves if they want to land a big-time safety prospect.

They do have four-star Demello Jones‍ on board, and they’re in pursuit of Statesboro (GA) standout Kam Mikell‍, who could also get a look at the safety spot.

The Bulldogs did not recruit in-state safeties Jakob Gude‍ (UCF commit), Noah Dixon‍ (Clemson commit), or Ricardo Jones‍ (Clemson commit).

They did recruit 5-star KJ Bolden, but the elite 5-star spurned the Bulldogs last week in favor for FSU. Look for the Bulldogs to continue recruiting Bolden until Signing Day in December.

The Bulldogs signed six defensive backs in the 2023 class, so there’s no need to panic, but this is far from an ideal scenario for Fran Brown and the rest of the defensive staff. They’re seen two safeties back off their commitment, and they didn’t land a commitment from the No. 1 safety in Bolden.

The Bulldogs now have two current defensive backs committed in 5-star CB Ellis Robinson IV‍ and 4-star DB Demello Jones‍.
