ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s UGA Football program has been ranked No. 1 to start the 2023 season by the coaches’ poll, which was released on Monday.
Georgia is coming off back-to-back national titles. The Dawgs have not been ranked No. 1 to start the season since 2008. Seven months after routing TCU by a record breaking 65-7 score in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Georgia is in essentially the same position as it was a year ago: entering the new season as the defending national champion.
What is different is that Georgia was ranked No. 3 in last year’s preseason coaches poll and was not ranked at the top of the AP poll, either.

Confidence in Georgia’s program has increased from coaches voting in the poll, and that can be seen across the board. Georgia received 61 of the 65 first place votes. Michigan, ranked No. 2, did not receive any first place votes. Alabama received four and Ohio State received one.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Georgia has the best odds to win the national championship this season at +220, and it is not super close. Alabama is the second closest at just +600 odds, followed by Ohio State with +700 odds.
Georgia was also picked by the media at the 2023 SEC Football Media Days to join the conference, something that had not happened in over a decade.
