ATHENS - UGA football defensive line coach Tray Scott and UGA football has just landed a commitment from one of the top defensive line prospects in the country.

4-star DL Joseph Jonah-Ajonye‍.

A promising, versatile defender out of Oak Ridge (TX), Jonah-Ajonya is a big 6-foot-4, 270-pound newcomer to football. Having played only three years, Jonah-Ajonya has unlimited potential as a run-stopping defender and impactful pass rusher.

Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners were believed to be the team to beat early, but as Dawg Post reported in June, the Bulldogs have been trending heavily with the Texas native since his visit in late May.

The big four-star prospect called UGA his “dream school” this spring, and now he’s 100% committed to Kirby Smart and the back-to-back national champions.

Tray Scott and the Bulldogs have had a lot of success putting their defensive linemen in the NFL, and in 2022, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Travon Walker with the No. 1 overall pick in the Draft.

With Walker on board, the Jaguar’s NFL odds according to FanDuel to win the AFC South sit at -160.

W‍hy did Joseph Jonah-Ajonye‍ commit to UGA Football?

Because he knows he will be developed by Tray Scott and be able to play for a championship.

“Winning is most important to me”, the four-star told Dawg Post. “Getting developed and becoming the best in the country is also important. Georgia has all the tools for me to become the best. The weight room is amazing. The treatment facilities are amazing. The rehab facilities are the best that I’ve seen.”

“What stood out about (Coach) Scott was his energy,” Jonah-Ajonye added. “I love his energy. I like how he’s excited about the future. He’s a competitive guy and loves to win. He loves to develop his players to make them the best in the country. Coach Scott loves my explosiveness, speed and power. He likes how much technique I already have. He plans on putting me at defensive end but in some situations I could move down to tackle.”

“Coach Scott said that I would play as a freshman because their rotation is impressive”, he continued. “Everyone gets to play. Everyone gets experience. He said I’d get developed at a high level. I’m trying to enroll early so hopefully by my sophomore year I could start, then enter the draft after my junior year. That’s the plan.”

What is UGA Football getting in Jonah-Ajonye?

Size, a great motor, and sky-high potential.

Again, this young man just started playing football his freshman year of high school. He’s developed and learned a ton through his first three years of high school, but he’s still a big athlete who continues to get better.

He’s lightning quick off the ball, bends well around the edge for size, and shows great pursuit of the ball carrier. He loves to compete, loves the game and gives it everything he has on every play. He knows how good he can be, and under the leadership of Kirby Smart and Tray Scott, the young defender knows his best football is still ahead of him.

Jonah-Ajonye has a muscular frame, raw power and explodes off the snap. He loves to get after it and proved to be a promising pass rusher last year as a junior. Like he told Dawg Post in June, he can play inside or outside at the next level, making it easier for him to see the field in Athens when the time comes. This is an excellent pickup for the Georgia defensive staff. If they can develop him properly (as everyone expects) the Texas native has the potential to have an excellent career Between the Hedges.

Jonah-Ajonya becomes Georgia’s 4th defensive line commitment, joining 4-star DE Justin Greene‍, 4-star DT Jordan Thomas‍, and 3-star Quintavius Johnson‍.

He’s considered the consensus No. 8 defensive lineman in the nation, the No. 11 prospect in Texas, and the No. 47 overall prospect in the country.
