ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will take on Shane Beamer and his South Carolina Gamecocks at 3:30 on CBS.
That announcement was made by the network today. Georgia is coming off back-to-back national titles. Coach Kirby Smart enters his eighth season at UGA with a 81–15 record. A year ago the No. 1 Dawgs thumped the Gamecocks 48–7. That game was broadcast at noon on ESPN. It was watched by 3,000,000 viewers a season ago.

The Bulldogs are one of the three most-watched teams in college football, which is one reason CBS would be eager to grab the game. The network is in its final season of broadcasting SEC games. It is not permitted to select games during the first two weeks of the season, so the USC-UGA game comes on the first weekend CBS could select an SEC game.
Georgia’s star power coupled with a relatively weak SEC weekend of games made the selection a relatively easy one. Tennessee’s trip to Florida and LSU’s trip to Mississippi State were the only other two conference games that weekend. BYU plays at Arkansas, while Georgia Tech plays at Ole Miss. Kansas State visits Missouri that weekend as well. None of the other SEC teams play major foes that weekend. Alabama’s game at South Florida is controlled by Disney.
This could be the final regularly-scheduled annual meeting between Carolina and the Dawgs. With the addition of Texas and Oklahoma as well as a probably move to a nine-game schedule for SEC play, the Dawgs and Cocks might not play one another each season. Insiders say Georgia’s only certain annual SEC opponent in the future is Florida.
The South Carolina-Georgia game has fallen in viewership over the last few seasons. The high-watermark game for the series came in 2013 when the No. 11 Bulldogs beat Steve Spurrier and the No. 6 Gamecocks 41-30 in Athens on ESPN. More than 7 million viewers watched that game. A year later, 6.7 million watched No. 24 South Carolina beat No. 6 Georgia on CBS.
