ATHENS - It was the morning after Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart  won his second national title in as many years. Sipping a drink, he shared an emotional moment that he said nearly made him cry. 

Kirby discussed the obligations that come with winning a national championship and the sacrifices that some of his players made to achieve that goal. He expressed his pride in the players who chose to stick with the team rather than enter the transfer portal, stating that it made him want to cry.

Smart acknowledged the prevalence of the NCAA’s Transfer Portal and how it can be a vehicle for players to go elsewhere and still be successful. However, he emphasized the importance of putting the team above oneself, which he believed was exemplified by the players who chose to stay with the Bulldogs.

While Smart is known for being serious and guarded, there is a side of him that the public rarely sees, according to those who know him well. As a former athlete, Smart understands the pressures that coaches face and the sacrifices they make. Smart's emotional moment came before the deaths of two individuals in his program, one of whom was a player. Despite the tragedies, Smart's focus on the importance of team and sacrifice remains unchanged. He expressed gratitude for the players who chose to stay with the Bulldogs and pursue a national championship.

Many of the players who stayed with the Bulldogs were quality individuals who Smart had met during the recruiting process.
