ATHENS - Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback D.J. Shockley had a pretty firm take on Kirby Smart’s situation at quarterback.
“It is definitely Carson's job to lose,” Shockley told FOX 5’s Cody Chaffins after the Bulldogs’ G Day event ended Saturday afternoon.
Beck went 15 of 22 for 231 yards with a touchdown during his performance on Saturday. Brock Vandagriff, who Beck has been competing against this spring, was 13 for 25 with 135 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

“I think (Beck) came in as the unspoken guy,” Shockley said, acknowledging that Beck was the backup quarterback behind Stetson Bennett in 2022. “I think Brock still has a ways to go. I think he is still learning. He still has to get out here and play. You have to remember Carson played last season. Brock really hasn't done that.”
The Bulldogs will start the season with two games that should provide ample ability for all quarterbacks on the roster to get time playing this September. UGA opens with Tennessee-Martin on September 2; then the Dawgs get Ball State a week later. Those two games lead up to the Dawgs’ SEC opener against Shane Beamer’s South Carolina Gamecocks on September 16 in Athens.
We saw a lot with Carson (Beck) today,” Shockley said. “I thought he did a really good job of being calm and being poised inside the pocket. I think he did a good job of knowing when to use certain throws. I thought he did a good job of standing there and making a couple of plays. Also getting in and out of the huddle. He played within himself. I thought he did a good job.”

Kirby said after the game that his three signal callers have an opportunity that most quarterbacks in college football don’t.
"I was really please with all three quarterbacks. We have three good quarterbacks. They can make the throws,” Kirby said after the event. "Carson has been in our system the longest. The key is they all get to develop. I can assure you there is no one in the country getting more reps than our guys because we had three deep this spinet, and we will have four deep this fall. Some universities can't give them the reps because they don't have the depth.”
