ATHENS - Kirby Smart, Glenn Schumann and the Georgia Bulldogs may have the best middle linebacker duo in college football.

If they’re not the best, I don’t know who is.

The two combined for 146 total tackles last year while leading the Bulldogs to another national championship. They bring experience, leadership, playmaking ability, and so much more.

As good as they were, Kirby Smart wants them to keep working. It’s easy to be complacent, but now Smart is making sure they both stay hungry and continue to work on their craft.

“They started out the spring in a curious position, whereas last spring they had a chip on their shoulder and nobody knew who they were, everyone is questioning them, so they were out there hungry, eating off the floor. They both had good seasons, but I had to call them in at one point because I didn’t think that they were practicing with the same ferocity that they would’ve been practicing with last year.”

He’s right.

This time last year, the average college football fan didn’t know who Mondon and Dumas-Johnson were. To most, they were just the guys trying to replace Nakobe Dean, Channing Tindall, and Quay Walker.

Now, they both have high expectations placed on them for thee 2023 season. But in order for them to meet those expectations, they’ll have to keep competing and improving in practice.

“I showed them some clips and said ‘Here’s you last spring and this is the way you were practicing when you had something to prove, and here’s the first four practices of this spring”, Smart added. “Is that the same two guys?’. I think they both acknowledged that it probably wasn’t, and it needed to be, and that’s the disease that’s out there. Since that conversation, they’ve both really picked it up and been great leaders. It wasn’t that there was anything wrong, it’s just that they weren’t doing it right enough.”

Smart and Schumann know how to get the best out of their linebackers. The beginning of spring practice may have been a small wake up call to the playmaking linebackers. If they continue to work hard and practice to the standard Smart expects from them, you’re going to see Georgia’s dynamic duo have another massive season for the Bulldog defense.
