Georgia Bulldogs’ linebacker Nolan Smith put on an impressive show at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

This is starting to become a theme for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. Last year, Travon Walker’s impressive numbers at the combine helped catapult him into being the first overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft

Smith tore his pectoral muscle against the Florida Gators in late October, which shut him down for the remainder of the 2022 season. He never left the program as he rehabbed and worked out in preparation for the draft, which made his numbers at the combine a little more impressive.

Smith ran a blazing 4.39 40-yard dash. He also showed off his 41.5” vertical. Both of those measurements are the best among “defensive lineman” in this year’s combine.

For reference of how fast he is, NFL superstar running backs Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkely did not run that fast. His 40-yard dash time is also faster than many star wide receivers in the league.

This time did not please Smith. He was caught speaking on the phone after he ran.

“I wasn’t even running full speed,” Smith said.

Full speed or not, he ran a sub 4.4 40-yard dash time. He is one of the fastest edge rushers at the NFL combine ever.

In addition to those tests, he ranks third at the position in broad jump with a 10’3” measurement.

Before his injury, most mock drafts had him going in the first round. Many of the mocks had him slipping into the second round once he tore his pec. There are still a couple months and a pro day for Smith to improve his stock, but that combine performance was eye-opening.

The biggest knock on him right now seems to be his size. At 6’3” and about 235 lbs., he is a little thinner than many successful edge rushers in the league. Then again, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick just led the NFL in sacks, and he has an even smaller frame than Smith.
