ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have just offered one of the top 2024 quarterback prospects across the South.

That would be in-state signal-caller, Jake Merklinger‍.

A Savannah, Georgia native out of Calvary Day School, Merklinger is a strong-armed quarterback at 6-foot-2 195-pounds and the first 2024 peach state quarterback to earn an offer from the national champion Georgia Bulldogs.

Current Bulldog offensive coordinator Todd Monken already has one impressive quarterback on the commit list in four-star Ryan Puglisi‍, but as Dawg Post has reported since last summer, Monken plans to take two quarterbacks in the 2024 class.

The Bulldogs sit in a great position right now for 5-star Dylan Raiola‍, but they’ll have to fight off the USC Trojans and the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the top-ranked prospect in the country.

Of course, the staff has to keep their options open, and now Merklinger holds an offer from Georgia.

“It’s pretty awesome to receive an offer from your home states school”, Merklingeer told Dawg Post. “I am very thankful. Any offer I get is special no matter what the school is. I will continue to look at my options and evaluate schools. I hope to visit sometime during the spring.”

Ranked as the No. 2 QB prospect in the state by Dawg Post, Merklinger threw for just under 2,000 yards last year as a junior, but threw for 32 touchdowns to just two INTs.

Leading an offense that wanted to run the ball more than throw it, the junior made the most of his passes and showed one of the strongest arms in the state. He throws a beautiful ball down the field and does a good job of hitting his receivers in stride. He knows how to put touch on the ball, while knowing how to rip it into tight windows as well. He’s technically with a quick release and impressive footwork in the pocket. He makes great decisions with the ball and has been a D1-caliber prospect for well over a year now, holding offers from Auburn, Arkansas, Boston College, among others.

More importantly, Merklinger knows how to lead a winning football team. He led the Cavaliers to an impressive 11-1 record last year and will have them in contention for a state-championship run as a senior in 2023.
