ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are back-to-back national champions, but they’ll be losing plenty of starters from last year’s team.
Jalen Carter is gone. He should be a top-5 pick at worst.
Broderick Jones is gone. He should be an easy 1st-round pick.
Kelee Ringo is gone. He’s another 1st-round candidate. So is Nolan Smith and Darnell Washington. Veteran Christopher Smith won’t be around. Same with Stetson Bennett, Kenny McIntosh, Warren McClendon, among others.
That’s a LOT of production that needs to be replaced. Still, the Georgia Bulldogs will be one of the more talented teams across the country this year.
So who is the best player on the 2023 roster?
That answer is obvious. It’s tight end Brock Bowers. He’s been one of the top players in college football for the past two seasons and is pound for pound the best player in the game right now. USC quarterback Caleb Williams is VERY good. Dude just won the Heisman Trophy last year. But is he a better quarterback than Brock Bowers is a tight end? I don’t think so.
So it’s clear Brock Bowers is the best player on Georgia’s current roster.
The big question is who is the 2nd best player on the roster? Let’s take a look...

On offense, you might have to start with starting center, Sedrick Van Pran. The multi-year starter could’ve left early for the NFL Draft, but decided to come back for one final season in Athens.
Already one of the best offensive linemen in college football, Van Pran will be one of the team’s leaders in 2023 and has a chance to dominate on a weekly basis next fall. He’s an NFL center and without a doubt one of the top players on Georgia’s roster.
What about Ladd McConkey? The former three-star prospect has made play after play throughout his Georgia career and saves his best when the lights are the brightest. As good as he is, is he really the 2nd best player on the roster? That seems doubtful.
Amarius Mims didn’t start last year, but it’s hard to dismiss his size and overall potential. He has a chance to have a monster breakout season, and in 12 months, there’s a good chance he’ll be looked at as one of the best players on the team. He’s not there yet, but he has the potential to be one of the best players in the team once September rolls around.
Kendall Milton is becoming the back everyone thought he would be. 2nd best player on the team? Don’t think so.
What about Carson Beck? Right now, it’s hard to label him as the 2nd best player on the roster, but we might be singing a different tune as the 2023 season moves along if he does in fact win the quarterback job.
Defensively, you have a few options.
One that comes to mind is Smael Mondon. One of Georgia’s breakout defenders from last season, the former 5-star led the team in tackles last year with 76 total stops. He also added 8 TFLs and one key INT in the 2022 SEC Championship. He’s a real candidate as the 2nd best player on the roster.
Then you have Jamon Dumas-Johnson. Another linebacker with plenty of experience, Georgia’s inside linebacker has been consistent throughout his career and has flashed NFL potential.
What about Javon Bullard? A big play machine for the Bulldogs down the stretch, the playmaking defensive back played better and better as the season moved along and saved his best games for the CFP Playoffs. He has All-American potential in 2023.
Malaki Starks and Mykell Williams should also be in the mix. They’ll only be sophomores next fall, but it’s clear they have become true playmakers on defense. Both have 1st-round potential and flashed consistently last year. Are either one the 2nd best player on the roster? Maybe not this second, but they could be very soon if they continue to progress.
There are plenty of options. Who do YOU think is the 2nd best player on the current roster?
