ATHENS - The Kirby-Copter was out and about in South Georgia on Thursday as Georgia’s national championship head coach was out seeing top targets and commitments.
January is a recruiting month, and of course, there’s always plenty of talent to check on in South Georgia.
What schools did Smart check on? Let’s take a look...
Colquitt County
One of the state’s top programs, led by one of the state’s best coaches in Sean Calhoun, the Packers are on the rise and coming off a fantastic 2022 season where they made it to the 7A semi-finals.
The Packers have two Georgia commitments on the roster in the 2024 class in 5-star TE Landen Thomas and 4-star WR Ny Carr.
As juniors last year, Thomas caught 44 passes for 753 yards and 8 touchdowns. Carr caught 62 passes for 1,051 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Thomas County Central
The 12-1 Yellow Jackets were one of the top programs in South Georgia last year and have plenty of young prospects on the roster.
The Bulldogs recently offered Yellow Jacket freshman defensive Camron Brooks who is one of the hottest prospects in the area right now. The 6-foot-4 225-pound EDGE defender made four sacks in his first season last fall.
Valdosta
One of the more historic high school football programs in the country, the Wildcats have had some down years of late but with Shelton Felton on board, Valdosta is coming off a promising 8-3 season and should be back to their winning ways sooner than later.
Valdosta’s top prospects are 2024 DL Omar White (Colorado commit) and 2024 DL Eric Brantley (Colorado commit)
Lee County
Always a championship-contending program, Lee County is home to big-time 2025 RB Ousmane Kromah who rushed for 1,504 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore last fall.
Dougherty
One of the top programs in Albany, the Trojans are home to 5-star RB Kam Davis.
Davis, a 5-foot-10 200-pounds FSU commitment, rushed for 1,115 yards and 13 touchdowns from the quarterback position while throwing for 2,736 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading Dougherty to an impressive 9-3 record.
Schley County
Down in Ellaville is where you’ll find some of the top talent across the peach state. The Single-A runner ups from last year have built a strong, winning program over the last several years and have two major Georgia targets on the roster.
LB Zayden Walker, Dawg Post’s No. 1 player in Georgia for the 2025 class, is a dominant two-way player at 6-foot-3 220-pounds who brings plenty of speed, toughness and athleticism. He’s an easy 5-star candidate in the 2025 class.
2024 ATH Jalewis Solomon is a standout WR/DB who also holds an offer from Georgia. The 4-star caught 86 passes for 1,210 yards and 10 touchdowns while making 29 tackles and 3 INTs defensively.
Lowndes
Another former powerhouse program in South Georgia, the Vikings have a new head coach on board in Adam Carter who came down from Grayson. They don’t have any major Georgia targets on the roster this second, but it may not be that way for very long.
