Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs just keep on winning.

After signing one of the nation’s top 2023 recruiting classes, the Bulldogs are off to an excellent start early on in the 2024 class, and landed a commitment today from one of the nation’s top defenders.

That would be high 4-star safety, Peyton Woodyard‍.

The hard-hitting 6-foot-2 190-pound safety out of St. John Bosco (CA) was a very early Bulldog target and they were able to get Woodyard on campus multiple times including a trip in early November to see the Bulldogs take down Tennessee in Sanford Stadium.

What makes Georgia speecial to Woodyard?

“Georgia is special because they have created an environment that will allow me to not only excel on the football field but also ensure that their student athletes are prepared to thrive off the field as well. There are internship opportunities and they have a great business program as well. The facilities are top notch and the coaching staff is amazing. I was really impressed with all the resources that they have available for all the athletes. They have the staff there to develop me for the next level of football. Coach Smart also emphasized the importance of academics and having a plan once football is over, which is the essence of the Georgia Way.”

“Coach Smart has played the game and has surrounded himself with coaches that understand how to relate and teach his brand of football”, Woodyard added.  “That includes being smart, physical and relentless. Coach Smart played my position in college and the defensive backs and the defense as a whole played great all season!”

What are the Bulldogs getting in Woodyard?

Length. Closing Speed. Natural Instincts.

Woodyard brings everything that Smart and his defensive staff are looking for in a defensive back. A long, rangy safety who covers a lot of ground down the field in coverage who can close on the ball-carrier in a hurry. Against the run, Woodyard does a good job of reading the play early so he can fly to the football. He’s quick, instinctual, and takes good angles to the ball. Once he gets to the ball-carrier, he knows how to deliver a hit.

In coverage, Woodyards knows how to cover a lot of ground in a split second. He plays the ball well in the air and does a good job of deflecting the pass away from receivers. His length allows him to get his hands in the right place, knocking the ball away from big receivers on the outside. He has a natural feel for the position and has the size and instincts that should translate into a very dependable defender in the back end.

There’s a lot to like about Woodyard’s game and he has a chance to be one of Georgia’s highest-ranked defenders in the 2024 class.

As a junior this fall, Woodyard made 54 tackles, 8 pass deflections, and one INT. He’s ranked in the 247 Composite Rankings as the No. 2 safety prospect, the No. 2 player in California, and the No. 29 overall prospect in the country.
