LOS ANGELES - Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart have gone back to back as the champions of college football. The No. 1 Dawgs blew out the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Los Angeles Monday night.
The Bulldogs finished the 2022 season undefeated for the first time since 1980. Georgia’s 65-7 win over TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game was the program’s second in as many seasons.
No program has gone back-to-back as national champions since Alabama reached that accomplishment with Kirby serving as Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator in 2011-12. Georgia’s Stetson Bennett completed his long journey in college football as one of the few signal callers to win the national title as a starter in two seasons.
Bennett’s improbable march to the mountaintop doesn’t match the rest of the Dawgs’ powerful program, which is loaded with five- and high-star recruits who were coveted by nearly every program in the nation.

But it was Bennett’s emergence as starting quarterback from the 2022 Arkansas game on that’s been the fuel for the Dawgs’ offense. Georgia’s defense, meanwhile, replaced a slew of starters to the NFL as high draft picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. The defense continued its dominating ways, but held on during the epic 42-41 Peach Bowl win over the Ohio State Buckeyes in Atlanta a week ago.
That win underscored the Dawgs’ connection and composure - two things that have driven the program forward more than anything else of late.
The 2022 national title is the program’s four consensus national title, and four other titles to give the school eight overall.
