ATLANTA - Only a day away from the College Football Playoff Semifinals, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum said the Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart were on the precipice of a remarkable achievement.
The No. 1 Bulldogs take on Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday night at the Peach Bowl. The winner will take on the winner of the Fiesta Bowl for the national title. The Dawgs are coming off a national title in 2021.
“(Winning back-to-back) titles would be a remarkable achievement considering UGA had not a national championship since 1980,” Finebaum said Friday morning.
The Bulldogs are considered 6.5-point favorites to defeat the Buckeyes. They are considered -125 to win the national title itself - giving them about a 56% chance to win it all... the most of the four teams in the playoff.
A year ago No. 3 Georgia beat No. 2 Michigan and then No. 1 Alabama on the way to the program's first national title since 1980. Alabama isn't in this year's College Football Playoff, something Finebaum noted in his criticism of the Tide and coach Nick Saban.

"This was a bad year for Nick Saban. This was probably the worst coaching job I’ve seen from Nick Saban at Alabama. He had the best player in the country in Bryce Young and then Will Anderson. (Alabama) underperformed," he said.
Georgia took out LSU to win its 14th SEC title - second all time behind Alabama - earlier this month. Georgia lost to Alabama a year ago - setting up the Tide's path to the CFP.
Finebaum correctly followed his comments about what could be with what would have to be:
“They have to win it first,” he said.
