ATHENS - Signing Day is here and it’s been another massive success for Kirby Smart, Fran Brown, and the rest of the Georgia staff as they try to close strong and finish with one of the top-ranked recruiting classes in the 2023 cycle.
For Smart, you can never have enough quality defensive backs, and they’ve added another one just now from three-star ATH, Kyron Jones.
A tough player with track speed and a muscular frame at 6-foot-0 200-pounds, Jones was one of the top running back prospects in the Charlotte area this year out of Charlotte Christian (NC) and was a NC State running back commitment until Monday night when he opened up his recruitment.
After taking official visits to Georgia and Nebraska earlier this month, Jones knew he needed to evaluate his recruitment before making a final decision, and in the end, he decided his best option was to play in the secondary for Fran Brown and the Georgia Bulldogs.

What will Jones bring to Athens?
Athleticism and versatility.
One of the top two-way players in the Charlotte area, Jones is a pure athlete who could play either running back or defensive back at the next level, but at Georgia he’ll be a versatile defensive back with good feet and ball skills.
The small-school star has plenty of speed and won the state championship as a junior in the 100 meters (10.60) and 200 meters (21.60). He’s a strong straight-line runner who can cover bigger receivers on vertical routes down the field, but he knows how to come up and close quickly on shorter routes as well. He’s a sure tackler and knows how to rip the ball away from opposing receivers in coverage.
He’s a little bit of a project, but he’s a good enough athlete and shows the traits needed to be a successful defensive back at the next level. He might start out at the safety position, but as strong, heavier defensive back, he could also play some STAR, allowing him to match up well with opposing tight ends in coverage.
