ATHENS - Mid-December is here, meaning it’s the “no sleep” time of the year for college football coaches across the country.
Between recruiting, adding from the transfer portal, and preparing for bowl games, December has become one of the craziest months of the year in college football.
For Kirby Smart and Ryan Day, their focus is on recruiting this second, but they’re also ready to start preparing for the Peach Bowl. That’s where the no sleep part comes in.

Ryan Day and the Buckeyes need all the prep time they can get. They know they’re going up against a high-powered Bulldog offense, and they need as much time to prepare as possible.
Ohio State’s head coach was asked about Stetson Bennett and Georgia’s offense earlier this week.
“They do a good job of playing off the defense” Day told reporters. “On offense, (Stetson) Bennett is the one who gets it all going. Now, they certainly have talent all across the board. Their offensive line is big. Both tight ends are very, very talented. The running backs and receivers are every good, but it’s the quarterback who makes it all go. I think they do multiple things that make them effective. They’re creative with how they do them. They’re certainly playing good football here down the stretch.”
He’s right. Bennett is an established veteran and has one of the best play-callers in the game dialing up plays for him. The 2022 Heisman Trophy finalist has plenty of weapons around him, one of the top offensive lines in college football, and a dependable rushing attack to help him out.
Bennett is coming off a near-perfect game against LSU in the SEC Championship, and Day knows his defense has to be ready for everything Bennett throws their way. He also took a second to admire Bennett’s “unbelievable story”
“He’s played unbelievable and deserved to be up in New York City last weekend,” Day said. “What an unbelievable story of someone who came through a lot of adversity along the way in his journey to get to where he’s at. From a far, it’s been a joy to watch him compete.”
It may not be a joy to watch him compete against his Buckeyes, but so far, Day has apparently admired Bennett’s story at Georgia from a far.
Now, does his defense have any chance of slowing down Steston Bennett and Georgia’s offense?
Well, that’s another story. One we’ll learn about in two and a half weeks.
