ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs were once again ranked No. 1 in this week’s College Football Playoff Committee rankings.

The ranking means that a win all but assures that the Bulldogs will be home for the holidays at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta if they beat LSU in the 2022 SEC Championship Saturday. It is extremely unlikely that Michigan would jump the No. 1 Bulldogs with a win over unranked Purdue Saturday night in the Big Ten Championship Game.

"I can see the argument for Michigan to be No. 1," Joey Galloway said when talking about who should be No. 1. "I wouldn't fight you, but I would not agree with you.”

"If you do that you deem the conference schedule irrelevant," former UGA DL and ESPN's David Pollack responded.

Georgia defeated non-conference foes Georgia Tech and Oregon in 2022. Michigan did not play a power five school outside of its Big Ten schedule this fall.

The ranking was not a surprise. Nearly 94% of voters in the AP Poll and Coaches Poll voted Georgia No. 1 after this weeknd. Georgia took out Georgia Tech 37-14 in Athens. But it was Michigan’s destruction of former No. 2 Ohio State that got all of the attention.

Georgia Back at No. 1 in the CFP Rankings

The No. 1 Dawgs are set to take on LSU in Atlanta on Saturday. That game kicks off at 4PM on CBS. Georgia is considered a 18.5-point favorite to beat the Tigers. This is the fifth time in six years Georgia has won the SEC East. LSU lost at Texas A&M Saturday night - ending its hope to win a national title in Brian Kelly’s first season as coach.

Four top-ten teams in last week’s rankings lost - including LSU and Clemson, which saw their narrow paths to the playoffs vanish on the final weekend of the season.

Rankings Review

*In 2022, the Bulldogs checked in at No. 3 in the CFP rankings last in the first rankings this season. Last year, Georgia was No. 1 in all five regular season CFP rankings and were No. 3 on selection day.

*Georgia transitioned from No. 3 in the preseason poll to No. 2 after week one and then to No. 1 in the Associated Press (AP) poll prior to the South Carolina game in mid September.

*After whipping the Gamecocks 48-7, the Bulldogs assumed the top spot in the Coaches poll as well. The Bulldogs were a consensus No. 1 for the next two weeks. Then Georgia fell to No. 2 in both the AP/Coaches polls following its 26-22 road win at Missouri on Oct. 1. After a 42-10 win over Auburn in week six, the Bulldogs reclaimed the top spot in the AP poll.

*Georgia has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in 27 of the past 29 AP polls, with the other two weeks at No. 3.
