STARKVILLE - It’s never easy to go on the road and play great football in the SEC, and we saw that tonight at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville.

Kirby Smart and the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs had strong first half, but a special teams blunder allowed State to return a punt back for a touchdown to give them life before halftime.

That’s as good as it got for Mississippi State as the Bulldogs took the game over in the 3rd quarter and cruised to a big 45-19 victory.

This game didn’t come easy for Georgia. The Bulldogs shot themselves in the foot quite a bit in this game, giving up a special teams score along with two Stetson Bennett INTs. The defense played fantastic for the most part, but did give up some big plays through the air.

In the end, the Georgia Bulldogs proved in the 2nd half why they’re the No. 1 team in the country. They made the plays they needed too offensively and played well enough defensively to secure the win. It wasn’t always pretty, especially the roughing the punter call early in the 4th quarter. Still, Georgia won the game by 26 points. They beat Mississippi State by more than the experts expected.

It’s clear Georgia’s played much better this year. They had trouble running the football consistently, they weren’t elite on the offensive line, and played their worst special teams game of the season. Even with plenty mistakes, Georgia’s talent won out.

We do need to give Mississippi State a lot of credit. They gave Georgia their best shot. They played tough defensively at times and made Georgia work for every rushing yard they got on the night. Well, the late Kendall Milton touchdown was easily, but that was about it. There was no quit on the home sideline tonight and they deserve a lot of credit for how they pushed the No. 1 team in the country in the first half.

Players of the game?

Jalen Carter and Ladd McConkey.

State didn’t have an answer for either one all night. Kearis Jackson made some plays offensively, so did Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. However, McConkey’s explosiveness and big-play ability was the difference for Georgia on offense.

McConkey ended the game with five catches for 71 yards and one touchdown while adding another 70-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, Jalen Carter had 6 tackles and one sack. Safety Malaki Starks had 8 total tackles, as did linebacker, Smael Mondon. Georgia’s defense gave up under 250 total yards tonight to the opposing Bulldogs.

At the end of the day, Georgia went on the road, at night, and secured a comfortable victory. This was a business trip, and it was a successful one for the nations’ No. 1 team.
