ATHENS - For the first time this season the Kirby Smart at the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs will be featured on ESPN’s College Gameday program.

The Bulldogs are coming off of a 42-20 win over the Gators on Saturday. Georgia is 11-17 all time in so-called Gameday contests. The Bulldogs are 4-2 in those contests in Athens.

Georgia defeated the Vols 41-17 in Knoxville last season. The No. 3 Vols are undefeated this season, and are coming off a 44-6 win over rival Kentucky in Neyland Stadium Saturday night. The No. 1 Dawgs have not lost in Sanford Stadium since 2019. That is Georgia’s only loss at home since the 2016 season.

The College Football Playoff’s first rankings of the year will be released Tuesday night. The Bulldogs and Vols both hold wins over AP-ranked top-ten teams (Oregon and Alabama). The winner of the showdown in Athens will almost certainly be ranked as the No. 1 team in the playoff in the second week of the rankings, and have a firm grip on the SEC East.

For years the Bulldogs and Vols didn't face one another each year, but that changed in 1992 when South Carolina and Arkansas entered the SEC. That formed divisions in the league, and the Vols and Dawgs have player yearly ever since.

Tennessee controlled the 1990s - winning each game the between the two programs that decade. But the arrival of Mark Richt drastically shifted the series. Richt led the Bulldogs to a shocking win over the Vols in 2001, before getting firm grip on the series over the last two decades.

Kirby Smart is 5-1 against the Vols as a head coach.
