ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs pushed Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide out of the No. 1 spot in college football the second time this season.

It is the second time this season the Bulldogs have taken the No. 1 spot from Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. This time came after Georgia’s total destruction of Auburn - a 42-10 win in Athens.

Meanwhile the Crimson Tide dropped to No. 3 after a final-play win over Texas A&M at home. The 24-20 win over the Aggies kept the Tide from losing for the first time this season. Ohio State, which pounded Michigan State 49-20 in East Lansing, moved up to No. 2.

All three programs have their fair share of first-place votes in the poll. UGA leads the way with 32. The Buckeyes have 20 first-place votes. Alabama, which took 25 top votes a week ago, now has only 11.

Georgia was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll nine of the 15 weeks in 2021. Alabama was at the top the other six weekends in 2021. The last time a team other than the two SEC powers was ranked No. 1 was 2020 Clemson the week the Tigers lost at Notre Dame in November that year.

Clemson is ranked No. 4 in this week’s poll - jumping Michigan. The Tigers travel to Tallahassee for a prime-time tilt with the Noles Saturday night. Clemson is a 5-point favorite to win.

Georgia and Alabama are not scheduled to play one another in the regular season. They could only matchup in the SEC Championship or College Football Playoff.

Georgia hosts Vanderbilt this weekend. According to FanDuel, the Bulldogs are 38-point favorites to beat Vandy. Alabama travels to No. 6 Tennessee for a huge showdown between the old rivals in the Third Saturday in October. Alabama has won 15 games in a row in the series, and is a touchdown favorite to win.

Alabama hasn’t been favored by fewer than 14 points in the series since 2008 (AL -5 @UT; AL won 29-9).

Ohio State hosts lowly Iowa in two weeks.
