BULLDOGS WELCOME TIGERS TO TOWN
Second-ranked Georgia (5-0, 2-0 SEC) returns to Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium Saturday to play host to the Auburn Tigers (3-2, 1-1 SEC). Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised by CBS. Saturday will mark the 126th playing of the Deep South’s oldest rivalry. The Bulldogs hold a 62-56-8 advantage in the series includ- ing winning the past five meetings. This will be Auburn’s first road game of 2022 after playing its first five at home.
Last Saturday, the Bulldogs rallied past Missouri 26-22 in Columbia while LSU erased an early 17-0 deficit to beat Auburn 21-17. Auburn opened the year with wins over Mercer and San Jose State before No. 22 Penn State posted a 41-12 victory. The Tigers bounced back with a 17-14 win in overtime over Missouri and then closed out the five-game home stand with LSU. Saturday will be Auburn’s latest road opener since 2016 when it faced Mississippi State on Oct. 8.
Georgia is averaging 39.0 points a game this season (third in the SEC) while the Tigers are averaging 22.4 points a game. In Scoring Defense, Georgia leads the SEC and ranks fourth nationally, allowing just 10.8 points a game. The Tigers are allowing 21.6 points a game. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 195-54 this year, but in the last two games, the Bulldogs have surrendered 22 apiece after Georgia’s first three foes combined to tally just 10 points.
PASSING ATTACK
The Bulldogs are third in the league in Total Offense (521.4 yards/game). Thanks in part to the performance of senior QB Stetson Bennett so far, the Bulldogs are also third the league in Passing Offense (342.8 yards/game). Ben- nett has five touchdowns and one interception plus four rushing touchdowns this year. He is completing 69 percent of his passes and has 1,536 yards going into the Auburn contest.
BULLDOGS RANKED IN THE TOP TWO
Georgia transitioned from No. 3 in the preseason poll to No. 2 after week one and then to No. 1 in the AP poll prior to the South Carolina game. After whipping the Gamecocks 48-7, the Bulldogs assumed the top spot in the Coaches poll as well. The Bulldogs were a consensus No. 1 for the next two weeks. Then Georgia fell to No. 2 in both the AP/Coaches polls following its 26-22 road win at Missouri. Georgia has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in 19 of the past 21 Associated Press (AP) polls, with the other two weeks at No. 3.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Despite a record 15 players getting selected in the NFL draft, including five defenders in the first round, Geor- gia’s defense, at least through the first five games, looks to be one of the country’s best yet again. The Bulldogs rank fourth nationally in Scoring Defense at 10.8 points/game. The Bulldogs whipped No. 11 Oregon 49-3 in the season opener in Atlanta, blanked Samford 33-0 in Athens, routed South Carolina 48-7 in Columbia, S.C., bested Kent State 39-22 in Sanford Stadium and most recently edged Missouri 26-22 in an away contest.
Senior OLB Nolan Smith, redshirt sophomore DB Kelee Ringo and senior S Chris Smith are the Dogs’ three returning defensive starters from last season’s team. For the third time in school history, Georgia led the nation in Scoring Defense. The 2021 unit allowed just 10.2 points/game and only 153 total points in 15 games.
