ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs won’t be traveling to Oklahoma in 2023 after all.
That news broke Wednesday when the SEC said that Georgia’s game with the Sooners, as well as the Tennessee-Oklahoma game scheduled for 2024 was being moved to a later date. Georgia annouced shortly after the SEC’s statement that UGA will host Ball State on Sept. 9, 2023
In a release, the conference said it’s “has directed” the Dawgs and Vols to postpone their scheduled matchups with the Sooners because the “transition” of Oklahoma into the league won’t allow UGA and UT to successfully complete their home-and-home obligations called for in game contracts.

“Because the second non-conference game in each of the Georgia-Oklahoma and Tennessee-Oklahoma series is scheduled to take place after Oklahoma joins the SEC in 2025, the Conference is directing the postponement of the Georgia at Oklahoma game in 2023 and the Oklahoma at Tennessee game in 2024 until such time that those matchups become part of the Conference rotation of games in future years,” the league said.
Much speculation has surrounded the possibility of Oklahoma, Texas and the Big 12 negotiating an early exit for the Red River rivals from that league. It is unclear if this move is an indication of that, or simply a way for the SEC to start its scheduling from scratch in 2025 when the Horns and Sooners are scheduled to arrive. The SEC has been considering a nine-game schedule for its future as a 16-member league.
Two weeks ago the Big 12 said it planned on starting future TV deals with both ESPN and FOX - perhaps opening a door for Texas and Oklahoma leaving early. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has been on record that any early departure of Texas and Oklahoma would have to be worked out by those two and the Big 12 - the SEC would not be involved.
It is unclear what the Bulldogs will do with the start of their season. Of late, Kirby has been interested in playing big games at the start of the season. The 2023 Oklahoma game was set to do that next season. Georgia annouced shortly after the SEC’s statement that UGA will host Ball State on Sept. 9, 2023. The Bulldogs are scheduled to open the 2023 season in Athens against UT-Martin.
