ATHENSGeorgia Bulldogs‘ senior quarterback Stetson Bennett has been named the Walter Camp National FBS Offensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement Sunday.

Of course, that’s not surprising after Bennett threw all over the No. 11 Oregon Ducks in Atlanta on Saturday, leading the Bulldogs to a comfortable 49-3 victory.

Kirby Smart chose Bennett as the starting quarterback after the Vanderbilt game last year, and Bennett has defeated every team he’s played against since then, including a national championship victory over Alabama last season.

Bennett, a native of Blackshear, Ga. picked up right where he left off last season with his giant performance in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game to give him 15 career wins as a starter.

Bennett was 25 for 31 (80.6 percent) for a career-high 368 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one rushing score.  Assuming the spot behind center for three-plus quarters against the Ducks, Bennett helped the Bulldogs go 8-for-8 on third downs while he was in as 11 different Georgia players hauled in catches in the season opener.

Georgia’s starter credited the offenses’ third-down execution and the play of his offensive line after the victory on Saturday night.

“You know, that's what I'm most proud of is the 3rd downs”, Bennett said. “I mean, that's what we were harping on, 3rd down and red zone, this whole off-season, and we executed.”

When you've got guys like him and you've got an O-line and have four seconds to throw the ball, you would hope that you have a quarterback that can throw the ball to guys”, Bennett added. “We have confidence in ourselves and the preparation that we put into it to go out there and execute like that.”

Bennett is the first Bulldog since former Georgia linebacker and current Miami Dolphin Channing Tindall late last season to earn Walter Camp weekly honors.  While Bennett is the 11th Georgia player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors in history, he is the first player on offense since Todd Gurley in 2014.

Georgia takes on Samford (1-0, 0-0 Southern Conference) in Athens at Sanford Stadium on Saturday.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the SEC Network will televise the matchup.
