ATHENS - After signing one of the top 2022 recruiting classes in the country, it appears Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs struck gold with former 5-star DL, Mykel Williams.
We’ve heard Smart reference Williams before as a guy who has been impressing, and he spoke more about his star freshman to reporters on Monday.
“His performance in camp as continued to grow”, Smart said. “I think since he got here he's been a non-traditional freshmen. He's never been really impacted by accolades, hype, even intimidation by being here in terms of drills and knowing what to do. He's fit in really naturally.”

Williams was a 5-star for a reason. He has the size, athleticism, and work ethic that should help him see the field early and often this fall. He’s excellent against the run, but he also knows how to get after the quarterback, finishing his senior season last year with 12.5 sacks.
“I think being from where he's from, Columbus, he got up here to so many practices it was just a very steady climb, and he's continued to do climb”, Smart added. “He's not had up and downs and lack of effort and tired and not understanding. He takes really good care of his body. He's very intelligent. He learns the system well and he plays really hard. Those are attributes that help true freshmen get on the field.”
Williams’ versatility should also allow him to see the field early. At 6-foot-5 265-pounds, there’s a chance he starts out on the EDGE, but as he continues to grow and add muscle, the Columbus native should be able to slide inside as his career progresses.
That sounds like another five-star who just came through Athens in Travon Walker, who was selected No. 1 overall in this year’s NFL Draft.
One of Georgia’s leaders and top overall players, outside linebacker Nolan Smith, also praised the true freshman defender on Monday.
“I think he’s positive to be around”, Smith said. “He plays great football and he’s just a great kid that’s ready to learn. He comes through ready to learn every day. I’m excited for all of our young players.”
Smart needs some new faces to step up on defense, and sources believe Williams will be up to the task this fall. He’s a special player, and his journey as a Bulldog officially starts this Saturday against Oregon.
It should be a fun one to watch...
