Georgia Bulldog Coach Kirby Smart Has "Something Special" In Mykel Williams

ATHENS - If there’s one thing you can always count on, it’s that Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will sign an excellent recruiting class.

Smart helped sign another outstanding class in 2022, and one of his highest-ranked signees has already made quite an impression.

That would be five-star EDGE defender, Mykel Williams‍.

The dynamic pass rusher out of Hardaway (GA) in Columbus is a former Southern Cal commitment with an ideal frame off the edge at 6-foot-5 260-pounds. Williams ended his high school career as the No. 4 overall prospect in the country according to the 247 Composite Rankings and the No. 2 prospect in Georgia according to Dawg Post.

Smart was asked about Williams during SEC Media Days and had nothing but positive things to say about his freshman standout.

“Yeah, the number one thing that stands out about him is his work ethic”, Smart told reporters. “You never hear anything about him academically. I look out my window, and I see him out there doing extra after every practice.”

“I left work the other day on a Sunday, and he's out there hitting a sled on Sunday”, Smart added. “When you have a freshman that's out there on Sunday on his own, on turf, 115 degrees out there, he's out there striking a sled, something special.”

Williams has all the talent in the world, and should see the field in some capacity as a freshman, but his work ethic has really made an impression during his first few months in Athens.

“He's talented”, Smart said. “I'm excited for him. I can't say what his role is going to be right now because I don't know fully which way we'll use him, where we'll play him. He's a great athlete. He's a great young man. He comes from a great family and a great program.”

Whether he lines up on the edge, slides inside, or gets some early reps on special teams, it’s safe to say Williams is going to do everything he can to see the field early on. He was a 5-star for a reason out of high school, and he’s bound for a 5-star career Between the Hedges.
