ATHENS - It’s safe to say that the Georgia Bulldogs have the most talented tight end room in college football.
By a mile, actually.
The top tight end in college football, Brock Bowers, is coming off a record-breaking season where he caught 56 passes for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Bulldogs also have massive 6-foot-7 265-pound Darnell Washington, who has seen plenty of action during his first two seasons in Athens. One of the top blocking tight ends in college football, Washington’s frame and strong hands always make him an option in the passing game.
With both Bowers and Washington out for the spring, Georgia fans got to see possibly the next impact tight end in Athens.
Of course, that’s true freshman Oscar Delp.
The big 6-foot-4 225-pound pass-catching tight end out of West Forsyth (GA) was Todd Hartley’s only tight end target in the 2022 class and Delp showed why during the spring game.
Delp had a big opportunity at G-Day and made the most of it, catching a team-high seven passes for 91 yards. He showed soft hands, the ability to get open, and a knack for picking up tough yards after the catch.
Head coach Kirby Smart spoke about Delps’ performance after the scrimmage.
“I thought he had a decent scrimmage today”, Smart said about Delp. “He caught the ball well. He ran after the catch well. I thought he didn't get too caught up in the moment and played well. He like Arik has been thrown in the fire.”
Georgia’s head coach added that Delp will need to continue working on his blocking, but Delp did make a key block on an early Daijun Edward’s touchdown run. A major weapon as a pass-catcher, if Delp can handle his own blocking on the edge, it appears the true freshman, even in a crowded room, will find a way to see the field in 2022.
