ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs announced Tuesday that longtime supporter and global brand Coca-Cola would release national championship cans and bottles to celebrate the Dawgs’ 2021 national title.

UGA said the new cans will be out this week, and that bottles will be released in August. The drink maker made what turned out to be very famous 1980 bottles - the last time the Bulldogs won it all.

Several fans released videos that went viral drinking the four-decades old soda after the Dawgs beat No. 1 Alabama 33-18 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Indianapolis in January.

Coca-Cola has long been associated with the Bulldogs. Current Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has a bottle of the Atlanta-based soft drink in front of him during all of his press appearances. Rather than drinking Pepsi’s rival-named Gatorade, the Dawgs drink Powerade, which is a Coke product.

Coke was first made just a few years before the Bulldogs’ first game ever. Since that time the two have had a close relationship, which culminated in the cult-like status of the 1980 Coke bottles, which featured a cartoon Bulldog drawn by legendary Bulldog Jack Davis, and with the scheduled on the back showing all 12 wins, culminating in the 17-10 win over Notre Dame in the 1981 Sugar Bowl.

Soon after that win over the Irish, Coke produced its first-of-its-kind commemorative bottle and accompanying tray.

"We congratulate the Georgia Bulldogs on their College Football Playoff National Championship win and encourage fans to celebrate with us in Coca-Cola's home state," said Crawford J. Jones, Vice President of Coca-Cola UNITED's East Region, which is based in Atlanta. "Georgia fans can toast to their team's victory by relishing the delicious, refreshing taste of Coca-Cola in a commemorative can or glass bottle."
