ATHENS – The Georgia Bulldogs held the fourth spring practice of 2022 (and is currently holding at the time I am typing this) on a beautiful evening on campus.
For the media, this was the first real look at what Georgia's 2022 roster has to offer. It was also a longer look than what the norm was during fall practices. Open viewing periods were averaged out to be around 12 minutes each in 2021. Today, a whopping 20 minutes was granted. That is a 75% increase.
There are a lot of holes to fill, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, but hey, what else do you expect from a national championship team loaded with four and five star talents?
What does the offensive line look like? Which early enrollees look to be impact players? Who is practicing and who is not?
Here is the rundown:
Offense
- Quarterbacks
- Stetson Bennett, who has +20,000 odds to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy according to FanDuel, was the clear number one guy
- Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton followed him in that order
- This was what the wide assumption was
- Stockton was wearing no. 14, but he may have to fight that out with Arik Gilbert
- Running Backs
- Here was the order: Kenny McIntosh, Kendall Milton, Daijun Edward, Sevaughn Clark
- Branson Robinson will likely take Clarke’s spot when he arrives to Georgia
- Wide Receivers
- Arian Smith was in a non-contact jersey
- Dominick Blaylock and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint were practicing in full
- Ladd McConkey was hanging out with injured players, but there did not seem to be any issues for him
- Tight Ends
- Ryland Goede looked to be taking the first team reps with Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington out with injuries
- Washington was on a scooter with a lower left leg injury
- Arik Gilbert was going after Goede, with Oscar Delp (no. 4) following him
- Gilbert is a physical specimen. Looked to be a little taller than Delp
- Delp looked extremely fluid in drills
- Offensive Line
- The first team offensive line from left to right:
- Broderick Jones, Xavier Truss, Sedrick Van Pran, Warren Ericson, Warren McClendon
- Amarius Mims was taking reps after McClendon
Defense
- Defensive Line
- It was difficult to tell a depth chart order
- Warren Brinson looked to be going with Jalen Carter and Zion Logue
- Mykel Williams (no. 13) could make some noise s a freshman
- Nazir Stackhouse was in that mix
- Outside Linebackers
- Nolan Smith, Robert Beal, Chaz Chambliss and MJ Sherman seem to be the top four guys at the position
- Inside Linebackers
- Jamon Dumas-Johnson looks to be the top guy and Nakobe Dean’s replacement
- Jalon Walker (no. 11) was taking reps with him
- Cornerbacks
- Kelee Ringo is the man for Georgia. His national championship sealing pick-six secured that
- William Poole was taking reps with him
- Nyland Green was in the second team rotation
- No. 6 was in that group with Nyland Green. It could be Daylen Everette
- Safety
- Chris Smith looks to be banged up
- He was wearing his normal jersey, but he looked sluggish in drills and was always taking reps at the end
- Dan Jackson participated but in a non-contact jersey
- Javon Bullard looks like he is taking first team reps
- Malaki Starks (no. 24) was getting coached up a lot by Will Muschamp
- He looks just as talented as the top guys
- Chris Smith looks to be banged up
