Georgia Bulldog Signee Shot Twice - in Back and Shoulder
A Georgia Bulldogs football signee was sent to the hospital Monday after being shot twice, police said.
EJ Lightsey, who signed with the Bulldogs in the class in February, was shot Monday night around 6:30 PM in at park in Fitzgerald. ESPN has reported that Lightsey has been transferred to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
Lightsey is stable condition according to reporting from WALB in Albany. He was shot in the back and shoulder, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Lightsey was named the Atlanta Journal-Consitution’s AA Defensive Player of the Year. Fitzgerald won the AA State title in late 2021. Dawg Post’s Matt DeBary says that Lightsey is a “sure-tackling linebacker.”
“He's productive, comes from a winning program, and has the size to make an impact in some capacity at Georgia,” DeBary said. “His stock has grown more and more over time, and he’s someone Georgia fans should be excited about.”
Lightsey picked Georgia over South Carolina during the February signing cycle.
“We felt very strong about him,” Kirby Smart said of Lightsey after he signed with UGA. “He ran very well at our camp, and we put a lot of value on camp evaluations because it’s the only thing we see with our eyes. Once the character checks out, the academics check out and play tape checks out, everything goes to the camp. This guy did a great job at our camp and was not afraid of work.”
