The Georgia staff wanted one more linebacker in their 2022 recruiting class, and they landed one today in three-star linebacker EJ Lightsey‍.

The 2A state champion out of Fitzgerald (GA) was previously committed to Florida but opened up his recruitment in early December. With four-star Shemar James‍ choosing Florida over Georgia during the Early Signing Day period, Lightsey was given an opportunity to join Georgia’s class. After taking an official visit to Georgia two weekends ago, and then taking a final official visit to South Carolina this past weekend, Lightsey decided to sign with Georgia, giving the Bulldogs another stout linebacker for the future.

So what are the Bulldogs getting in Lightsey?

The three-star signee is a sure-tackling linebacker with length and versatility. He’ll likely start out at inside linebacker where he’ll be coached and developed by one of the nation’s best in co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, Glenn Schumann.

At 6-foot-2 210-pounds, Lightsey is light on his feet and knows how to get off blocks. He may not be the strongest or fastest linebacker, and he may not flash as much as others, but he’s tough, physical, and has plenty of raw talent and potential. He moves well side to side and reacts quickly before the play can get started. He has some length to his frame with the ability to put on more mass and muscle over the next few years.

He can get after the passer on the outside and plug holes between the tackles in the run game. He's productive, comes from a winning program, and has the size to make an impact in some capacity at Georgia. His stock has grown more and more over time, and he’s someone Georgia fans should be excited about.

Lightsey gives Georgia three linebackers in the 2022 class who can play inside at the next level. Four-star C.J. Washington‍ and four-star Jalon Walker‍ are others who could be Schumann’s next big star on the inside. The Bulldogs also have outside linebackers Marvin Jones Jr.‍ and Darris Smith‍ to go along with three-star Carlton Madden‍.

Lightsey is ranked as the No. 49 LB prospect and the No. 494 overall prospect in the country for the 2022 class.
