ATHENS - Cortez Hankton, Georgia’s receivers coach, is leaving for LSU according to numerous reports.

The move was rumored for weeks and suspected to be on the way as soon as the Bulldogs completed their 2021 post season, which ended with Georgia winning the national title. Hankton is a Louisiana native, and will join new LSU coach Brian Kelley’s staff.

It remains to be seen where Georgia coach Kirby Smart will go with his hire to replace Hankton. Smart typically moves quietly on assistant coach moves - using his substantial Rolodex to pull in what he sees as the ideal candidate to recruit and develop.

Smart will likely try to land a candidate who will upgrade the Dawgs’ recruiting efforts at receiver. With a stable of highly-talented quarterbacks ready to get behind center soon, recruiting high-level receivers will be one aspect Kirby will look at in his decision.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs spent the weekend recruiting with the national championship trophy as a prop for recruits remaining in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 class who visited over the weekend.

Hankton is the second assistant coach Kirby will have to replace this offseason. Oregon coach Dan Lanning served as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator, and has started getting the Ducks ready for their showdown with the Dawgs in the 2022 season opener in Atlanta.
