MIAMI - Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning confirmed Monday that he will call the No. 3 Dawgs defense for the Orange Bowl against the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines.
“Our approach will be the same as it has been all season - nothing will change. I will still be making the calls.” Lanning said.
Lanning was named the head coach at Oregon earlier this month, but is staying to coach the Orange Bowl. Lanning said that he’s only been to Eugene once since getting that job, and that he’s had a lot of late nights dealing with the responsibility of both jobs.
“We work until the work is done. We have his some late nights,” Lanning said of splitting time between the Georgia and Oregon job. “I am not going to do a disservice to our guys.”
Georgia leads the country in scoring defense. At 35, Lanning will become the youngest head coach in major college football. Oregon will take on Georgia in the season opener at the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in September 2022.
Lanning is the fourth former assistant under Kirby Smart to have secured a job as a head coach in major college football. Michigan State’s Mel Tucker, Arkansas’ Sam Pittman and South Carolina’s Shane Beamer all had good to outstanding seasons in 2021.
The Bulldogs are listed as a 7.5-point favorite over Michigan by FanDuel.
