ATHENS - Georgia and Texas could face off in the next decade according to one report.
Chip Brown is reporting that UGA and Texas are “working on a home-and-home football series for what would “likely” be the 2028 and 2029 seasons. It is not clear which season would be in Athens and which would be in Austin.
Georgia’s marquee non-Georgia Tech out-of-conference games have been filling in of late. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play the following Power 5 schools in the near future:
2019 - Notre Dame
2020 - Virginia (in Atlanta)
2021 - None
2022 - Open
2023 - Open
2024 - Open
2025 - UCLA
2026 - at UCLA
The SEC has not released conference games for the 2026 season and beyond. Georgia has expressed interest in playing in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game more often, and it is possible that the Bulldogs could play in that contest in 2024.
However, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game doesn’t have any games scheduled after the 2021 season. So that means it is possible the Bulldogs could play in Atlanta for the season opener in 2022, 2023 and 2024. UGA has a contract for the opening weekends of the 2021 season, so a marquee game is unlikely that year.
Brown’s report backs up Dawg Post reporting regarding the Bulldogs talking with a slew of different teams about playing series in football. High-level UGA officials have said off the record that Georgia is unlikely to play a kickoff-type game away from Atlanta. UGA coach Kirby Smart has made clear his preference for playing neutral-site games in Atlanta.
