ATHENS - Only days away from a colossal matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs remain the No. 1 team in the country in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Those rankings were revealed Tuesday night on ESPN. Rivalry weekend reshaped the playoff race behind the Bulldogs with Ohio State falling to Michigan and Oklahoma losing on the road at Oklahoma State.

The Sooners no longer have a head coach as Lincoln Riley has departed for USC. Meanwhile Notre Dame, which is in the thick of the playoff discussion and only needs a few things to fall their way to creep into the top four, lost its head coach Tuesday as Brian Kelley was named the new head coach at LSU.

National consensus is that Alabama will have to defeat the Bulldogs to get into the playoff this season. And Alabama coach Nick Saban said this week that his team is in for a challenge.

“Georgia has been the No. 1 team in the country for good reason,” Saban said. “They're probably the most consistent, most dominant team week in and week out. So obviously going to be our biggest challenge, toughest test of the year.”

Georgia was ranked No. 1 followed by Michigan. Alabama held on to No. 3 with Cincinnati at No. 4. Oklahoma State checked in at No. 5 with the Big12 Championship at Noon on Saturday. Coach-less Notre Dame is at No. 6.
