Flip season has come early for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs this year as they are able to flip five-star EDGE defender Mykel Williams away from Southern Cal.
The giant 6-foot-5 265-pounder committed to the Trojans back in mid-June, but Dawg Post was told before the season that Williams was starting to get unhappy with his commitment. The Trojans fired head coach Clay Helton last month and sources say the Bulldogs have been to team trending behind the scenes with Williams ever since.
Williams took an official visit to Georgia this weekend with his family, and two days later, Williams decided to publicly “Commit to the G”
An in-state defender from Hardaway High School in Columbus, Williams is an excellent pass rusher off the edge and one of the top overall defenders in the entire country. He chose to commit to the Bulldogs, giving Smart’s defense another five-star in the 2022 class.
So what will Williams bring to Athens?
Athleticism and a pass rush.
Williams has an excellelent frame and knows how to run it in. His length gives him an opportunity to get off blocks with ease and he has a natural pass rush from the outside. He’s tough to contain as he can overpower smaller tackles and blow past bigger, non-athletic tackles in the region.
He’s absolutely dominating at the high school level and hasn’t beeen stopped all season. So far this season, Williams has made 45 total tackles, 17.5 TFLs, and 10.5 sacks already. He’s a QB’s worst nightmare and now he’ll be getting after SEC QBs over the next few years.
This is a BIG deal and a commitment Georgia fans should be partying about. The future of Georgia’s front 7 just got a lot faster and tougher with 5-star Mykel Williams now on board.
Where do the Bulldogs go from here?
Williams becomes Georgia’s 20th commitment in the 2022 class and the 4th defensive line commitment, joining 4-star DT Tyre West, 4-star EDGE Darris Smith, and 3-star EDGE Carlton Madden.
Williams is ranked as the No. 3 player in Georgia according to Dawg Post and the No. 29 overall prospect in the country.
