ATHENS - After a full week of trying to figure out who will start at QB against UAB this week, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs went with veteran Stetson Bennett IV to start the game over backup QB Carson Beck.
Smart, who told reporters earlier this week that Beck was the No.2 QB on the roster, started Bennett anyway, and it looks like he was right to do so.
Known as the “Mail-Man”, Bennett delivered today with the best game of his Bulldog career. He got the Bulldogs on the board early as he hit a wide-open Jermaine Burton on the 2nd play from scrimmage for a big 73-yard touchdown.
He followed that up on the next possession as he found running back Kenny McIntosh for a 12-yard score. Then he decided to go deep and find an open Brock Bowers down the sideline for an 89-yard score.
But wait, there’s more.
Three 1st-half touchdowns just weren’t enough.
Bennett decided to keep looking downfield for wide open receivers and found Arian Smith deep for the field early in the 2nd quarter for a 61-yard score. He hit Smith in stride who could just glide his way into the end-zone for the easy score.
Bennett wasn't done yet. Late in the 2nd quarter, on Georgia’s final drive of the 1st half, Bennett took over the Bulldog offense in great field position and found freshman TE Brock Bowers once again. This time it was a simple come-back route in the end-zone from 9 yards away.
Bennett’s 5 TD passes in the first half was not something most saw coming today. He gave the Bulldog offense some leadership and explosiveness, going 7/8 for 260 yards and 5 TDs in the first half alone.
Thanks to Bennett's big first half, the Bulldogs took a 35-0 lead into the locker room.
