Even though both players are in the NFL now, it seems the entire college football world still wants to talk about the Jake Fromm/Justin Field controversy.

The two former Bulldog QBs faced off against each other in the NFL Preseason recently and social media was quick to hammer Kirby Smart for “choosing” Jake Fromm over Justin Fields, who went on to have an outstanding career at Ohio State and was a 1st-round pick to the Chicago Bears in this year’s 2021 NFL Draft.

The folks at Pro Football Focus must have thought a true freshman Justin Fields was the better option instead of sophomore Jake Fromm, who led the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship and the National Championship game the previous season.

They would be wrong. They must have missed Fields struggle against Auburn. He sure struggled against Georgia Tech too at times at the end of the season. But yeah, Kirby Smart should’ve benched Jake Fromm.

Even Kirk Herbstreit, one of the biggest names in college football and a former Buckeye himself, is tired of the narrative that Kirby Smart got it wrong.

“SO RIDICULOUS this keeps being brought up! NO CHANCE of ANY QB dethroning the QB, the year before, led the Dawgs to the Natty as a FR! Obviously Justin is a special player-but this argument is TIRED! Please stop this!” Herbstreit tweeted out on Sunday.

Was Justin Fields the better QB the following year in 2019? Yes, he was.

Was he the best option for Georgia during the 2018 season? Absolutely not. He proved that multiple times throughout the season.

Jake Fromm isn’t as dynamic as Fields. He’s not as talented as Fields. He doesn't have the arm strength, either. But he was the best option for the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2018 season. That’s clear.

Would Georgia have beaten Joe Burrow and LSU in 2019 with Justin Fields? Probably not. Could Georgia have beaten Alabama last year with Justin Fields? Maybe. But we do know Justin Fields wasn't going to sit out two years. He HAD to transfer, and it worked out for him.

One day this debate will end. That will be a magical day. But it’s August in 2021 and the college football world is still talking about Georgia’s 2018 QB battle.

It’s time to move on.
