ATHENS - Even COVID 19 couldn’t hold the Georgia Bulldogs back from their lofty perch near the top of college football TV.
More than 8.73 million viewers watched Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs come from behind to take out No. 8 Cincinnati in the 2021 Peach Bowl. It is likely UGA’s New Year’s win is the second-most-watched Peach Bowl in history that wasn’t a College Football Playoff Semifinal.
The win over the No. 8 Bearcats was Georgia’s second most-viewed game of 2020 - trailing only the October date with No. 2 Alabama, which had 9.61 million viewers.
The 2021 Peach Bowl will stand as the No. 8 overall college football telecast of the year after the completion of the CPF National Championship Game. In addition, Georgia will end the season with four of the 18 most-viewed college football games of the year - no matter if those games are regular season or bowl games.
College football television viewership is down significantly in 2020. Still, the Bulldogs continue to be one of the most sought-after teams in the country for broadcasters. Georgia played only five games the were rated this year, and none of them fell under four million viewers.
The Bulldogs played in the most-watched SEC game of the year (UGA-AL) - a rare occurrence when a regular season league game topped the SEC Championship Game. UGA-Alabama game was also the No. 2 overall most-watched non-bowl game of the year - narrowly trailing Clemson at Notre Dame.
All five of Georgia’s games that were rated (meaning all games not played on the SEC Network) were within the top 35 of all games played this season in college football - including bowl games, which is another impressive showing of the marketing power of the Bulldogs.
Georgia’s games with Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee had audiences larger or at least as large at the Cotton Bowl - further cementing the Dawgs’ TV power.
