ATHENS - Georgia defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt is returning for another year of football as a Georgia Bulldog.
That is big news that comes from the Senior Bowl. Devonte Wyatt has not commented on social media, and Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has not been available to the media since Sunday’s 2021 Peach Bowl press conference.
The Bulldogs are on a Christmas break right now - with the team heading home for the first time since the group came together in the summer.
Wyatt has been listed as a senior for the Bulldogs this season. He signed with Georgia in 2017, but went to junior college before arriving in Athens in 2018.
He played 12 of 14 games and finished with 19 total tackles that year with a career-high seven stops in the Sugar Bowl vs. Texas. In 2019 Wyatt playing in 13 of 14 games, starting in the Sugar Bowl win over Baylor. This year he’s started all nine games for the Bulldogs with 21 tackles, which is the most for the Bulldogs’ interior linemen.
Wyatt’s return would mean Georgia would keep one of the Bulldogs’ top pass rushers. In 2020, Wyatt has had 14 quarterback pressures. His top game of 2020 was the Kentucky game on Halloween. During the Dawgs’ 14-3 win over the Cats Wyatt matched his career high in tackles with seven.
It remains to be seen what will happen with the rest of the Dawgs’ NFL-eligible players. Wyatt is taking advantage of a one-time ruling from the NCAA which grants seniors the ability to return for a final season of eligibility without counting against the NCAA-mandated 85 scholarships per program.
The No. 9 Bulldogs (7-2 SEC) take on No. 8 Cincinnati (9-0, 6-0 American Athletic Conference) in Atlanta in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Jan. 1. ESPN will televise the game at 12 p.m.
