ATHENS - UGA QB Jamie Newman is sitting out the 2020 football season.

That news comes with the Bulldogs only weeks away from their first game of the season at Arkansas. Newman transferred to UGA days after former UGA QB Jake Fromm declared for the NFL Draft.

In March it appeared Newman was gearing up to make a run at the starting job, but then the Bulldogs and the rest of the sporting world were sidelined by COVID-19. Spring practices never materialized.

In the summer former USC QB JT Daniels transferred to UGA and was soon thereafter cleared by the NCAA to be allowed to play for the Bulldogs. Kirby Smart reiterated Saturday that Daniels has not been medically cleared to play by UGA.

Junior Stetson Bennett, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis and true freshman Carson Beck have also battled for the starting job at UGA. Mathis, like Daniels, is returning from an injury (brain cyst) that sidelined him for the 2019 season.
