BREAKING: 3-star DB Javon Bullard Commits to Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs got a MUCH-NEEDED commitment in the secondary today in Baldwin (GA) defensive back, Javon Bullard‍.

The three-star defender chose the Bulldogs over Tennessee, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, N.C State, among others.

At 6-foot-0 183-pounds, Bullard isn’t “small”, but he’s not as big or long as other defensive backs that Kirby has signed over the last few years. His frame isn’t ideal, but to take his commitment right now means the staff must trust their evaluation of him.

Bullard was offered by Georgia in early May, and he quickly shot up Georgia’s board soon after.

“I was extremely excited”, Bullard told Dawg Post. “I know that Georgia is powerhouse school that is always a contender to possibly win a national championship. I also know that they have had great encounters with developing DBs.”

Bullard told Dawg Post that he “always” watches Georgia play, and the one game he saw in person last year was an away game when the Bulldogs defeated the Auburn Tigers.

So, what are the Bulldogs getting in Bullard?

Versatility and physicality.

His film won’t blow you away, and he needs to continue working on being a true cornerback, but Bullard is a good athlete who plays offense, defense, and special teams for his Baldwin team. As a defender, he has cornerback size, but he plays the run like a safety. He tackles great angles to the ball, he closes well coming downhill, and he knows how to shed blocks. He’s a physical player with above-average ball skills. He changes directions well, but it’s his ability to tackle that stands out.

If he does end up at cornerback, he’ll need to improve and develop more before seeing the field. He wasn’t asked to cover much in his region and rarely got tested by decent receivers. He’ll have to work on his cover skills, but he’s a defensive back who knows how to play the run.

So, where do the Bulldogs go from here?

At cornerback, four-star Nyland Green‍ continues to be the top target, and the Bulldogs have the momentum in his recruitment. He might continue to go back and forth with Auburn and Tennessee, but as of right now, the Bulldogs sit in an excellent spot, and he is wanted badly by the Georgia staff.

Four-star Kamari Lassiter is another target towards the top of Georgia’s defensive back board. The three-star from Tuscaloosa is a major Auburn target as well, and sources say the Bulldogs will have to hold off their SEC West rival in order to land the 6-foot-0 185-pounder.

Sources say JUCO All-American De’Jahn Warren is likely down to Penn State and Georgia with a decision coming in December. The Bulldogs are still expected to host the four-star cornerback the weekend before his commitment, if visits are allowed to happen at that time. Unless something changes, Dawg Post is told the Bulldogs will have a spot waiting for him in December.

With Bullard on board, look for the Bulldogs to add on one more cornerback in this class to go along with one more safety.

Overall, he’s not the flashiest commitment, but he’ll be welcomed by the staff with open arms right now. They liked him enough to extend an offer this spring, and they like him enough to take his commitment. Don’t let the ranking fool you, Kirby Smart thinks this kid can play.
