UGA football received much-needed good news on the recruiting trail Wednesday when it picked up a verbal commitment from one of the state’s top defenders in Cedartown linebacker C.J Washington‍.

The 6-foot-2 225-pound pass rusher picked the Bulldogs over reported offers from Tennessee and LSU, giving UGA a second pledge in the 2022 class.

So what are the Bulldogs getting in Washington?

A true pass rusher.

He’s not always the biggest guy on the field, but Washington is a sack machine who recorded 17 quarterback takedowns last fall as a sophomore. He may not play with his hand in the ground pre-snap too often in Athens, at least not early on, but he shows instincts getting after the passer no matter where he is on the field.

He’ll bring versatility to coach Kirby Smart’s defense as he will likely get a look at multiple spots at linebacker. He could play outside linebacker, but he has enough speed and quickness to play inside in certain situations. With his strength and ability to play downhill against the run, Washington has the skillset to play on the strong side and thrive. He’s not a pure sideline to sideline guy, but he’s got a great motor and never gives up on the play. He’s also a running back for Cedartown and not one to shy away from contact on either side of the ball.

Off the field, he’s strong as an ox and often trains with former UGA running back Nick Chubb back in Cedartown. He’s a hard worker, he’s driven and he loves being in the weight room.

Dawg Post ranks Washington as the No. 7 prospect in Georgia for the 2022 class. The composite rankings list Washington as the No. 5 inside linebacker target and the No.98 overall prospect in the 2022 class.
