GA Gov: Football "A Tall Task" This Fall w/o Mask Wearing Now

Georgia governor Brian Kemp wants to watch his Bulldogs play this fall, but admits a lot still stands in the way.

“If you’re ready for some football in the fall, as I’ve told my daughters, they keep asking me: ‘Dad, do you think we’re going to have college football? Surely we’ve got to have the season.’ I said: ‘Well, if people, especially our young people, don’t start wearing a mask when they’re going out in public and our numbers keep rising, that’s going to be a tall task.’”

The Bulldogs are set to play Virginia in Atlanta on Labor Day night to kick off the college football season, but Kemp warned Wednesday that Georgians need to wear masks to improve the chances of that game and others happening.

“People had let their guard down,” the governor continued. “We were moving in a very positive direction. Summer hit. People were itching to get out after weeks and months of shutdown - not only in our state but across our country. Quite honestly folks got lackadaisical a little bit, and we’re all guilty of that. But now is the time to renew our commitment.”

The Bulldogs’ game with Virginia is not the first Power 5 game of the year in the state. Georgia Tech hosts Clemson on Thursday, September 3 at Mark Richt Field. Two days later West Virginia plays Florida State at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.
