Dawgs Score Highest GPA in Program History

ATHENS - Kirby Smart and UGA announced Friday that the Bulldogs had the highest GPA “ever” for a semester.

Ever is a long time, and it is a heck of an accomplishment for the Bulldogs to achieve. In the grand scheme of things you have to wonder how many students at UGA just completed their wild semester with a B average.

The marks include the entire football program at UGA. What does this mean in terms of the 2020 season? How does that translate to the field?

It certainly means the Dawgs are hitting the books. UGA isn’t an easy place to go to school. No matter what fantasy the Dawgs’ rivals in Atlanta cling to about their alleged superiority, even the Jackets have to admit that UGA is one of the best public colleges in the country. For the football team to rack up a 3.02 GPA this semester means the program was focused.

As Kirby would say: “Keep the main thing the main thing.”

And while those in Silver Britches didn’t have the usual weeks of spring football to distract them from academics, they still had the usual requirements that student-athletes have any time of the year - conditioning, lifting and meetings.

Maybe the program is better suited for online classes. Maybe they got off to a hot start and rode that into the conclusion of the semester. Maybe this is a cultural shift in the program towards finishing things up the right way. We saw that in the Sugar Bowl in January.

No one piece of news dictates the type of year a program is about to have. This time a year ago, UGA was moving through an offseason that involved Justin Fields transferring (and the drama that went along with that), Jim Chaney leaving for Tennessee and JJ Holloman getting dismissed from the team for a domestic charge. UGA didn’t fall apart because of those things… it didn’t win a national title, either.

This offseason has been the most unique one “ever” to be sure. Time will tell what the future holds for this bunch of Dawgs, but they certainly held up their end of the “student” part of student-athlete this spring.
