91 Days to Kickoff - Dawg Post Countdown

ATHENS - Georgia is on the brink of its 100th all-time win over an AP-ranked team.

But win No. 91 was about as good a game as Sanford Stadium has ever seen. Two UGA quarterbacks, one former and one current, went head to head in a game where scoring was commonplace and the game ended on the final play.

No. 9 Georgia beat No. 6 LSU 44-41 at Sanford Stadium on September 28, 2013 in Athens. Justin Scott-Wesley scored the game-winning TD when Aaron Murray found him for a 25-yard TD pass with 1:47 to play in the game.

The game was a back-and-forth fight between Murray and LSU QB Zach Mettenberger. The two both signed with the Bulldogs in 2009. Mettenberger eventually transferred after the 2009 season, and the two matched up for this game in their final seasons as college quarterbacks.

It was probably the most memorable game of many memorable ones in the 2013 season. The Bulldogs started the year playing three top-ten teams before the end of September. A week later Georgia survived Tennessee in Knoxville, but paid a heavy price - losing several key members of the offense for the season to the Neyland Stadium turf.

Wins over South Carolina, the Gators and Tennessee were significant, but not like the win over LSU. Many fans still reference Mettenberger’s final drive to try to tie or win the game for the Tigers as the loudest they’ve ever heard Sanford Stadium.

Other notable 91s in the history of the Bulldogs…

Amp Arnold scored a 91-yard touchdown pass from Buck Belue during No. 6 Georgia’s 28-21 win over Ole Miss at Sanford Stadium on October 11, 1980.

Fred Gibson scored a touchdown on a 91-yard kickoff return during No. 8 Georgia’s 31-28 win over Clemson at Sanford Stadium on August 31, 2002.

Top UGA players to ever wear the No. 91
