92 Days to Kickoff - Dawg Post Countdown

ATHENS - It was relatively cold that night in Knoxville - at least it was starting to get cold.

It was particularly cold for Phillip Fulmer and the Vols… frankly this was either the beginning of the end of of the heyday, or something close to that for the Vols.

Sean Jones scored on a 92-yard touchdown fumble return during No. 8 Georgia’s 41-14 win over No. 13 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium on October 11, 2003.

The sideline at Neyland is a very loud place. That’s what makes winning at Tennessee, particularly when the Vols are good, so very difficult to do. You can barely heard yourself. It is one of the few stadiums in the league that has a roof (of sorts) and speakers at field level shooting the sound back into the crowd.

But it was quiet as Jones picked up the fumble and ran back to the other end of the stadium - very quiet. As he ran he was followed by silver britches, and as he approached the end zone, you could hear shrieks of joy coming from the Redcoat Band members assembling on the UGA sideline as Jones streaked towards them in glory.

Not that this is every about me, but I was getting ready to head inside for halftime, and I was getting my camera gear sort of packed up and ready to roll. Then the play happened, and I was scrambling. I managed to get an out-of-focus image… but it got the Redcoats’ joy.

It was a play that helped get UGA to its second SEC Championship in a row. A play that deflated Neyland Stadium like I’ve rarely heard. It was a defining moment in the history of the series between the two schools.

Sean Jones’ run to glory turned a dogfight into a blowout.

Other notable 92s in the history of the Bulldogs…

Randy Wheeler scored on a 92-yard touchdown pass from Kirby Moore during Georgia’s 21-19 loss to Auburn at Sanford Stadium on November 13, 1965.

Top UGA players to ever wear the No. 92
